Varanasi is the biggest holy city in India and one of the oldest cities in the world. It is more than 4000 years old and always inhabitated. Every day between 150 and 200 people are cremated in the pires of the Manikarnika Ghat. This is an old funerary tradition with a very meticulous ritual where families burn their deads for later throwing the remaining ashes to the river. There is the belief in Hinduism that the one who dies in Varanasi and gets creamted and  thrown to the Ganges will go directly to Nirvana getting rid of the reencarnation cicle of lives.
